Natural Solutions For Your TMD Pain

TMD (Temporomandibular Joint Disorder) is due to problems with your TMJ (Temporomandibular Joint). Your TMJ functions like a hinge and it connects your jawbone to your skull. If you have TMD it can cause many problems associated with that area of your face and jaw. Your TMD can be caused by a variety of reasons. It could have to do with your genetics, habits, injury or arthritis.

There are many treatments available to you if you have TMD. Depending on the cause of your TMD, Group Health Dental can effectively find a solution to alleviate your symptoms or prevent them from reoccurring. At times, reconstructive procedures or orthodontics may be an effective solution for your jaw pain. Mouthguards or bite splints can be used to prevent the pain.

There are also natural solutions you may try to help alleviate some of your symptoms of TMD while being treated by Group Health Dental.

For pain or tenderness in your jaw you may try applying diluted chamomile essential oil. Chamomile has a sedative effect and is nontoxic. You can do this by mixing .5 percent chamomile essential oil to an oil base and massage it along your jawline for some temporary relief from your jaw pain.

Moist heat is another tool to use to relax and soothe your muscles around your TMJ. To do this, heat a damp cloth in the microwave for about one minute (or until warm). Apply the moist, warm compress to your cheek for about 15 to 20 minutes at a time. You can even add a couple of drops of lavender oil to the cloth to add to the relaxation of your jaw.
