LANAP®
Laser Gum Therapy
Modern Laser Surgery in New York, NY
One of dentistry’s most useful advancements is laser periodontal surgery. As the second doctor in New York to provide the procedure, Dr. Donna Williams and our dentists know how to make the most out of this advanced procedure. Morningside Dental Care provides the FDA-approved LANAP periodontal treatment in upper Manhattan, and the Upper West Side of New York City. This minimally-invasive treatment can help you save teeth that would normally require extraction. Visit us for a second opinion if your dentist has told you that you need any teeth extracted.
How Does LANAP® Work?
When gum disease occurs, prompt treatment can prevent further spread of infection and also reverse its effects. LANAP, which stands for laser-assisted new attachment procedure, is used to treat this gum disease. This protocol is the most successful and comfortable way to address gum disease. It utilizes gentle laser light in place of scalpels and sutures.
Laser gum surgery removes infected soft tissue and sterilizes the pocket at the site of gum disease. We use the PerioLase® MVP-7™ instrument to perform periodontal therapy. This tool features pulse technology that clean teeth and vaporizes the diseased tissue leaving all healthy structures intact. Additional periodontal instruments are used to clean the plaque and tartar off the surfaces of the nearby teeth, preventing reinfection. The laser is used a second time to clot the blood and create a seal between the gums and teeth. This seal allows the body to recover quickly and properly, reducing the risk of re-infection.
The Benefits of LANAP®
When you visit our dentist in New York, NY for gum disease treatments, you will gain several benefits from the use of the LANAP protocol.
The most direct advantage is a more convenient healing period afterward when compared to traditional surgical methods. Removing the infected gingival tissue is a process that generally requires suturing to heal successfully. Not only do some patients find this uncomfortable, but healing with stitches takes a significant amount of time. In contrast, using a laser for soft tissue removal allows the gums to heal more comfortably and quickly without the need for sutures.
Additionally, LANAP’s ability to sterilize the site of tissue removal encourages successful healing. The elimination of bacteria, in addition to the nature of laser stimulation, allows the gums to heal fully and can regenerate a portion of their lost volume.
Because LANAP is key to helping you get the most beneficial periodontal care possible, it also helps protect your overall health. The condition of the gums directly correlates to your overall well-being. Having gum disease makes it more likely to develop heart disease, diabetes, and other persistent health risks. Dr. Williams’ experienced use of LANAP is one of the many ways our practice provides complete health dentistry.
